Before you apply

Vietnam visas

Do not treat historical guidance as confirmation of current entry eligibility.

The source describes two routes for obtaining a visa: contacting a Vietnamese mission or completing an online process. Procedures, eligibility, fees and available visa types can change.

Prepare accurate passport details, intended arrival dates, photographs and documents required under the current rules. Do not rely on an approval-letter or commercial service process unless it is confirmed by an official government source.

Pay only through a channel confirmed by the relevant authority and check which ports of entry your permission covers.

Vietnamese missions

Services and assistance

The Embassy is the Wellington contact point for questions about visas, consular information and Vietnam-related assistance.

The source also provides a worldwide directory of Vietnamese missions by city and country for people who need a representative office outside New Zealand.

Vietnam travel guide

Vietnam has varied climates and landscapes: the north experiences four seasons, central Vietnam has periods of heavy rain and typhoons, and the tropical south has wet and dry seasons.

The Vietnamese dong (VND) is the official currency. Card acceptance is greater in major centres, but travellers should keep an appropriate payment alternative for smaller locations.

Cuisine varies by region; pho, rice, noodles, seafood, fish sauce and shared dishes are characteristic. Lightweight, washable clothing and comfortable walking shoes are useful, with a jacket for cooler northern or highland conditions.

Vietnamese is the official language and uses the Roman-based Quốc Ngữ writing system. Tết (Lunar New Year) is the most important holiday and can significantly affect opening hours and transport. Vietnam is UTC+7 and does not observe daylight saving time.

Check current entry, health, safety, currency, transport and opening-hour advice before travel.
